AKRON, OH (August 12, 2017) — The Charge went into Saturday’s crucial two-game series against the Akron Racers knowing full well that nothing short of a pair of victories would allow them to prolong their 2017 season.

And while Texas (22-27) showed its grit by battling back from an early 2-0 deficit, it was Akron that punched its ticket to the National Pro Fastpitch Championship Series by collecting a 4-2 win at Firestone Stadium.

The Racers (25-24) saw their two-run lead slip away when the Charge’s Lauren Haeger and Nadia Taylor each smacked solo hone runs in the top of the fourth. Haeger’s homer came against starter Emily Weiman and cleared the fence in center field, while Taylor’s blast greeted reliever Rachele Fico and sailed over the left-field wall.

The 2-2 tie didn’t last long, though, as Akron came back to plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to vault ahead for good.

The eventual game-winning hit was delivered by Sami Fagan, who plated teammates Ashley Thomas and Kristen Wyckoff with a two-out single to left field.

The Charge saw Lauren Haeger reach base on an error in the top of the sixth, which allowed head coach Roman Foore to use Haley Outon as a pinch runner. Outon reached second  on a groundout by Taylor, but Fico used a strikeout and a flyout to escape the jam unharmed.

Texas’ last chance in the top of the seventh was denied by Racers closer Aimee Creger, who struck out the side to end the game.

Fico picked up the win for Akron after tossing three innings and allowing one run on one hit.

Haeger took the loss for the Charge after tossing six innings and giving up four runs — two earned — on five hits. The right-hander finished with four punch-outs.

Texas’ Renada Davis added the Charge’s only other hit in the ballgame and finished 1 for 3.

Texas and Akron will close the regular season today with a 4:05 p.m. game at Firestone Stadium.
