Charge Shutout Bandits

ROSEMONT, IL (August 8, 2017) — As the 2017 season enters the home stretch, Lauren Haeger is doing everything in her power to ensure the Texas Charge earn a spot in the National Pro Fastpitch Championship Series.

Three days after delivering the game-winning hit in a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Bandits in San Marcos, Haeger tossed a complete game shutout Tuesday in Rosemont, Illinois during her club’s 5-0 triumph against the same foe.

The victory helped the Charge improve to 22-24 on the season. Texas now trails the Akron Racers (22-23) by just a half-game in the battle for the fourth and final playoff spot. Coincidentally, the Charge and Racers cap the regular season with a two-game series in Akron this weekend.

“Everyone’s just kind of getting hot at the right time and I’m just really excited to see what the rest of the season holds for us,” Haeger said. “I think we have a really good chance.”

In Tuesday’s win, Haeger limited the Bandits to just three hits while pitching to contact and utilizing her squad’s solid defense. The right-hander from Florida worked around four walks and never allowed Chicago to get comfortable in the batter’s box.

“If you don’t leave the ball over the plate, you don’t usually get hammered too hard,” Haeger said. (Catcher Kristyn Sandberg) called a great game as well.”

Sandberg was also instrumental in the win offensively, as she belted a three-run home run in the top of the fourth that extended Texas’ lead to 4-0. Haeger then tacked on an RBI sac fly one inning later.

Charge leadoff hitter Taylor Gadbois finished the game 3 for 4, once again setting the table for the rest of the Texas lineup.

“Having Taylor on base, it makes you feel a lot more comfortable when you come up to bat,” Haeger said. “She’s doing a great job.”

Alisa Goler got things going for the Charge on Tuesday by delivering a solo home run to right field in the top of the first against Chicago starter Haylie Wagner, who took the loss.

Texas and Chicago continue their current series with a crucial doubleheader Wednesday in Rosemont, Illinois. The games are set for 4:05 p.m. and 7:05 p.m., respectively.
